The 2.8-liter Toyota 5M-EU 12-valve engine was produced in Japan from 1979 to 1989 and was used in several generations of popular models such as the Supra, Cressida and Crown. On the European and Australian market, this power unit is known under the index 5M-E.

Problems & disadvantages of the 5M-EU
Owners of power units in this series often struggle with cylinder-head gasket failure due to overtightening. Contamination of a choke or CCB can lead to the engine’s floating rpm, while faults in ignition system are common sources for other breakdowns. Furthermore, without hydrocompensators factored into design, these engines require periodical valve adjustment – so be sure to keep it mind and schedule regular servicing!
