The Renault K7M 1.6-liter 8-valve engine was first introduced back in 1995. It was first produced in Spain, until 2004 when it was moved to Romania, where it became the main engine of the budget models Dacia Logan, Sandero, Stepway or Loggi.

The K-series range also includes engines: K4J, K7J, K4M and K9K.

Описание устройства мотора К7М 1.6 литра 8v

The introduction of the K-series power unit to the first generation Megane in 1995 was a major technological advancement, as it boasted fuel injection engineering and a single ignition coil for 4 cylinders. This powerful engine was officially assembled in Valladolid, Spain and had its engine number, K7M, marked at the junction of the block and gearbox. After production of the 1st Generation Megane came to a close in 2004, this engine was moved to Romania, where it became integral to Dacia’s budget car brand. A few years later saw K7M’s migration further east when Dacia Logan and Sandero were built around this reliable motor.

Problems & disadvantages of the двигателя К7М

Cracked ignition coil

The most notorious problem with this motor is the cracked ignition coil. Moisture gets trapped in the cracks, which leads to engine thrashing and similar problems. Around 2012, there is a new coil that is free of this flaw.

Timing belt failure

The timing belt drive of this power unit has a replacement schedule of every 60,000 km, but the belt itself can go much longer. It is usually torn due to the wedge of the pump or tensioner roller, and the valves are bent here at breakage in almost 100% of cases.

Floating RPM

The engine rpm at idle is floating quite often and this is usually caused by contamination of idle speed regulator. Clogged injectors or air drainage through cracks or loose intake manifold seals may be another cause.

Oil and antifreeze leaks

The engines of this series are prone to oil and antifreeze leaks, and there are several weak points: the grease often oozes out through the front crankshaft oil seal or from the heat exchanger. The often cracked thermostat body is responsible for coolant leakage.

Minor Malfunctions

The disadvantages of this motor also include a low life of the crankshaft position sensor and the absence of hydro-compensators, so that the valve gap you have to adjust.

The manufacturer says the engine life is 250,000 km, but it can easily go 400,000 km.
