15. Neglected Spark Plugs or Ignition System — Misfires That Kill
Worn-out spark plugs, weak coils, or deteriorated wires cause misfires — incomplete combustion events that result in raw fuel entering the exhaust system. Not only does this damage the catalytic converter, but it can also wash away the oil film inside cylinders, scuffing the walls and harming piston rings.
Misfires are especially dangerous under load, as they produce violent pressure spikes and excess heat in the combustion chamber. Left unresolved, they can lead to melted valves, cracked pistons, or catastrophic engine failure.
Common symptoms of ignition system problems:
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Check Engine light flashing
- Increased fuel consumption and emissions
Prevention tip:
Replace spark plugs and coils as part of routine maintenance. Use only parts that match OEM specs, and avoid “universal” spark plugs or untested aftermarket brands.
