The 1.6-liter Toyota 3ZZ-FE engine was assembled from 1997 to 2009 at the company’s Japanese facility, as well as in the United States. The engine was assembled on front-drive models such as Corolla and Avensis. The engine received the VVT-i variable valve timing system only in 2000.
The ZZ family also includes engines: 1ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FED, 2ZZ-GE and 4ZZ-FE.

Problems & disadvantages of the Toyota 3ZZ-FE
Excessive oil consumption is a common problem in pre-2002 models, primarily due to the oil scraper rings not performing well. Decarbonization does not help in this regard. Other issues that may arise from this is extraneous noises or knocks in the motor that occur after roughly 150 thousand kilometers. This requires replacement of the timing chain, tensioner drive, and flushing of the throttle-damper module and valve system at idle speed. Vibrations can also occur as a result; if it’s something other than typical characteristics of that series motor, then it likely points to an issue with the rear cushion of the motor needing replacement. It is essential to have diagnostics carried out to detect problems early on and take remedial action as necessary.
