The 1.6-liter HR-series unit was first presented at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The design was quite usual for Japanese motor construction of those years: aluminum block with cast-iron liners and open cooling jacket, aluminum 16-valve head, timing chain drive, phasor control in the intake, and one-piece tappets instead of hydro-compensators.

Fuel injection here is distributed, but not quite usual, with two injectors per cylinder, and thanks to the use of electronic throttle unit the engine managed to fit into the Euro 5. A similar engine Renault H4M has modifications with one and two injectors per cylinder.

Problems of the HR16DE Engine

This very reliable engine in the first years of production was marked by a whole bunch of problems: there were difficulties with starting in cold weather, the muffler intake pipe ring often burned out, there was a mass recall campaign to replace the defective ignition unit relay.

Oil Compounding

The most well-known drawback of this motor is progressive oil consumption. It often appears on low mileage and disappears after the selection of a different lubricant, but more often oil consumption begins after 100,000 km helps only to replace the rings.

Low life of the timing chain

Many owners encounter tension in the timing chain at about 200,000 km. In addition to the chain, sprockets and pins, the expensive phasing unit requires replacement.

Small breakdowns

The minor problems of the power unit include not the longest service life of its supports, eternally whistling alternator belt and the need in adjustment of valve clearances.

The manufacturer says the engine life is 200,000 km, but it easily goes up to 300,000 km.
